We make up these people, fictional and one dimensional. Then we find someone, anyone, to stick these people on. We mold their fake characters onto a person’s skin with sticky tape, plastered like bad wallpaper. When finally the stick starts to fade, our characters come undone and we realize how we dislike the reality of who our friends and our lovers really are. But that’s how it is. The unraveling tape reveals the real people. They’re mean, and messy, and harsh, and passionate and real. We can keep our fictional delusions taped on as long as we want, but it will never be more than a facade. Take the tape off, be who you are and let them be who they are. They are not your toys or your characters….they are real and their identities do not depend on you.
